We went through the student's homework assignments on factoring difference of squares and difference of cubes, and on factoring by grouping. Once we walked through the steps, he was able to do them on his own.

The student had a review packet for a test this coming week. In the packet, it deals with identifying the proper equation from the word problem and doing different calculations with fractions. She is doing really well with this. I helped her do some of the problems in the packet, but she really did not have any trouble understanding how to work the problems. I have confidence that she will do well on her test this week.

We covered the entire topic of Forces, learning about different types of forces, force diagrams, and Newton's three laws. I also looked over his project and gave him some initial advice on the direction of the project. Overall, it was a very productive and successful tutoring session.

For this session, I pre-taught the lessons on adding and subtracting fractions. We covered addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators. Then, we covered addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators. We reviewed least common multiples and the means of determining them. We reviewed simplifying fractions. We also covered improper fractions and mixed numbers. The student is very capable of adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. She also is very capable of finding the lowest common denominator. She recognizes improper fractions and can simplify them into the correct mixed number. The area where she struggled was with regrouping when adding or subtracting fractions. We will work on this next time.

The student and I worked on his homework worksheet on prime and composite numbers for the first part of the session and worked on long division and patterns for the second part. His math teacher requested that we go over long division with two digits, and after the first problem, I could see where he was having trouble. However, after going through a few more problems and teaching him to guess and check, he was able to answer some more difficult questions without assistance. We then spent the last few minutes of the session working on patterns from his math workbook. We will spend the next session continuing to work through his review sheet for his semester exams next week.

Today the student finished her 4th grade word problems workbook. We have moved on to her decimals practice workbook. She remains strong in math computation but her biggest struggle is staying focused through multiple problems.
