Long Island SSAT- Middle Level Tutoring FAQ
The Secondary School Admission Test, also known as the SSAT, is used for admission to private elementary, middle, and high schools. There are three SSAT levels: Elementary, Middle, and Upper. The SSAT is available multiple times per year at designated testing sites worldwide.
The Middle Level SSAT is a multiple-choice exam for students who are currently in grades 5-7. There are three scored portions on the test and two that are not scored. The Quantitative, Reading Comprehension, and Verbal sections are scored. The Writing section is not scored, but it is sent to the admissions office of your selected school(s). It gives students an opportunity to show admissions officers how well they write and organize information. There is also an experimental section on the test, which is where new questions are tested. This section is likewise not scored. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with an exceptional SSAT Middle Level tutor who can assist your child with all areas of the exam.
The Quantitative section of the SSAT is broken into two parts. Your child will be given 30 minutes to answer each set of 25 questions. The questions measure your child's ability to solve problems involving arithmetic, elementary algebra, geometry, and data analysis/probability. Your child's personal SSAT Middle Level tutor can work with him or her on topics like estimation, sequences, absolute value, area, circumference, perimeter, and slope.
The Reading Comprehension section has 40 questions, which your child has 40 minutes to complete. This portion of the exam is used to determine how well your child is able to read and comprehend texts. Reading passages may be taken from the humanities, science, social studies, or literary fiction. They are usually around 300 words in length. Your child's tutor may work on recognizing the main idea, making predictions, or determining the author's purpose, attitude, and tone.
Your child will have 30 minutes to answer the 60 questions in the Verbal section of the SSAT, which is divided between 30 questions on analogies and 30 questions on synonyms. This portion of the test is used to measure verbal reasoning, the ability to logically relate ideas, and vocabulary attainment. Your child's tutor may work with him or her on developing the ability to recognize synonyms and the ability to accurately make comparisons between two similar concepts.
One of the most important benefits of working with a private tutor is the individualized learning plan the tutor will create based on your child's academic strengths and weaknesses. No time will be wasted covering topics that he or she is already proficient in. Instead, the time will be spent working with the concepts your child is struggling with.
The Varsity Tutors live learning platform is ideal for scheduling a personal SSAT Middle Level tutor for your child at a time and location that works best with your packed schedule. Private tutoring sessions can be held in a virtual environment or in person. Contact Varsity Tutors today to connect with an SSAT Middle Level tutor.

Recent Long Island SSAT- Middle Level Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I went through the assessment exam he took couple days ago. He scored around 1920 as his final score, which was only a short distance from our goal of 2100. He did a very good job on the quantitative and verbal section; he only needs to work on the reading section a little more. He seems to run out of time when finishing this section, but with adequate time he does get most of the questions right. We will work increasing his speed in our next session.
The student and I worked on the verbal portion of the SSAT. We reviewed synonyms and analogies from practice tests and examples from the website. I asked him to complete the practice tests in preparation for next week's session.
The student and I got a great start today working through the middle level SSAT. She has done some previous work with a tutor, and this has helped develop her vocabulary skills. In our first session, we worked through the analogy part of the English test and worked through the first of two Math sections. She is a quick study and understood corrections and strategies well enough to implement them on the next similar question.
Today the student and I finished going over the math homework from yesterday. We covered concepts including square roots, squares, and improper fractions. It was very successful and I look forward to tutoring him more subjects.
During this session the student and I worked on three key math concepts. We did numerous problems involving fractions, percentages and ratios. After completing some short lessons and sample problems, she demonstrated an ability convert fractions into percentages. She also showed progress on using her number sense (estimation) to eliminate answer choices. She struggled with the higher level questions that involved multiple steps or complex numbers (which is expected for a 5th grader). We also reviewed and completed sample problems from the verbal section of the exam. She demonstrated limited success with the synonym section. She described finding the analogies especially challenging. It is difficult to expand a child's vocabulary in a limited amount of time so in our next session we will focus on some basic vocabulary and answering strategies for synonyms. We will also review the different types of analogies in order to make her more comfortable with this type of question.
The student and I worked on some vocabulary words he had trouble with in his practice tests -- we reviewed definitions, discussed contexts, generated synonyms and made analogy questions. In our next session we will switch our focus from verbal to reading.
