East Orange 5th Grade Writing Tutoring FAQ
Fifth grade writing augments the foundational writing skills that your student has learned in previous classes. It not only helps students to continue expanding their vocabularies and learning the details of English grammar, it also challenges them to read a variety of texts with a critical eye. Fifth graders also begin to write with a persuasive bent in mind. While this wide variety of content helps keep students engaged with writing by introducing new facets of the subject, it can also result in students easily growing overwhelmed. Even the brightest students are likely to encounter some difficulty in one or more of the topics covered in fifth grade writing. No matter what challenges your fifth grade student is facing with his or her writing, Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a personal tutor. Private tutoring might be just the thing to help your child overcome the difficulties he or she is facing, and can help your student gain the skills and practice that he or she will use and need in future classes.
Whether your student is struggling with identifying various types of words and phrases in sentences, understanding what he or she reads, or writing his or her own compositions, an experienced tutor can be of assistance. Educational directors in your area can help you connect with writing tutors whose skill sets are best suited to helping your child master whatever aspects of writing he or she finds difficult.
Your child's tutor can create a customized learning plan that focuses just on their particular academic needs, which allows each tutoring session to be efficient and effective. Your child can work at whatever pace allows him or her to learn best. There is no pressure to keep up with the rest of his or her peers. This is not always the case in a classroom setting. Teachers aren't really able to slow down the pace of the class to accommodate individual students. But with private tutoring, your child can move at their own pace. A private tutor can ensure that they fully understand a particular topic before moving on to another one.
A lot of people believe that only students who are struggling can benefit from a private tutor. But a private tutor can also be beneficial if your child is moving beyond where the rest of their class is. Students who are too advanced often become bored, which may lead to behavioral problems or to them not doing well in their classes. A private tutor can help with this because they can provide your child with more complex assignments and lesson plans than their regular teacher can.
Another benefit of personal tutoring is that your student can receive immediate feedback on his or her work, as well as answers to questions that naturally come up during his or her learning process. Your child's teacher may not encourage questions, or your child may not feel comfortable asking questions in a classroom full of other students. But when they are working with a personable tutor who they feel comfortable with, they can ask as many questions as they need to fully comprehend each topic.
Fifth grade writing tutoring is also extremely convenient, since you choose when and where to have sessions. Varsity Tutors' live learning platform enables you and your child to meet with a private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This gives you and your child the flexibility to decide where they feel most comfortable studying.

Recent East Orange 5th Grade Writing Tutoring Session Notes
I gave the student a writing prompt: What animal would you like to be and why? He wrote the five requested sentences and I read and responded. He is a good writer. I showed him his switch in point of view and how to fix it. I then asked him to write three sentences describing how other animals would see him as the animal he chose, a porcupine. He wrote them. Then I directed him to revise the essay using first person throughout and showing how the animal's characteristics were attributes he would enjoy having. I also asked him to integrate the viewpoint of the other animals. He was able not only to change the emphasis of the character viewpoint, but to coordinate smoothly the required tasks. The final draft of his essay was finished in fifteen minutes with no grammar, spelling or punctuation mistakes.
In the first half of this session, I had the student take the outline form of his introductory paragraph (from his essay on waking up in the morning) and write it in paragraph form. He struggles with the concept of an outline, and he does not fully understand what a transition sentence is. I guided him through this writing process, and he seemed to gather a basic understanding of what it is to take an outline and turn it into a paragraph. This is only a draft version, and I plan on having the student edit his work next week. In the second half of the session, I reviewed the following parts of speech with him: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, articles. He seems to have a basic understanding of each of these parts of speech, but I would like him to master them. I will be giving him debriefings on these parts of speech as we use them. Next week, I would like to introduce the student to sentence diagramming.
This week we went over some spelling rules and root words. I brought a binder with special colored paper and notecards for her to keep and we made root word note cards for her. I chose the root words according to common core standards for middle school. We also thought about words that went with the given root words, and during the following week I had her write down some more words to go with the roots that she thought of herself. We also went over spelling rules- I thought that since she is so good at math, it might help her spelling to have some more logical rules to follow and remember rather than just trying to remember and practice individual words. I plan to continue going over more spelling rules, root words, and suffixes and prefixes in coming weeks.
First meeting, discussed his thoughts on his writing & reading skills, likes, and goals. Did an assessment of his writing, letter formation, neatness and ability to write on unlined paper. Did well but would like to have more uniformity in proper stroke order. Brainstormed ideas for his first persuasive project paper. He picked "Seahawks should have won," so now he has some serious research to do.
After reviewing scores provided by his 4th grade teachers, it is clear that the student is very intelligent, and while he is clearly not challenged with writing and reading comprehension, there is room for some improvement. He started reading "Artemis Fowl," the first of the books he will be writing about and we will be discussing together. He was given both reading comprehension and creative writing assignments, which we will edit together next session. I look forward to working with him and to watching him evolve as a reader and writer.
The student is very intelligent, but struggles with putting pen to paper. I have been tutoring him with writing prompts to be more expressive. He spent the first hour on writing a persuasive paper; the second hour was spent on a narrative. It seemed that the student was thrown off by the different day and time of tutoring. (My 'normal time' for the student is Saturdays from 9-11am)
